The Queen And The Emperor

Dear Editor,

I read with interest and disgust, mostly disgust, the article, in last weeks Wave, Bloomberg Launches Waterfront Strategy. That is the joke of all jokes to think that the number one violator of the waterfronts none other than himself, Emperor Mike, is interested in protecting the waterfronts for the benefit of the public. That’s even worse than leaving the cat to watch the cream. And to top off the joke the Emperor is working with the number two violator of the waterfronts, Christine Queen Quinn. The Queen and the Emperor had a waterfront Committee of the City Council, and that committee was made up of all attorneys. David Yassky, Joseph Addabbo, Vincent J. Gentile, Allen J. Gersen, Eric N. Gioia, Michael E. McMahon Gael E. Brewer and Sara M. Gonzolez. I wrote to each and every one of them on that committee, including the Emperor and the Queen, explaining that the Coastal Zone Management Act, CZMA, was being violated by developers. I even mentioned the locations, Sheep’s Head Bay, Gerritsen Beach, Coney Island and Rockaway Beach. I might as well have been writing to my next door neighbor in Ireland that wouldn’t know a waterfront from a Bog hole, and he is dead about 40 years now. Not a single response from any one of them.

The only reason the City Planning Commission is going through this at all is because National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA, is demanding that the city comply with the CZMA, and here we have the Emperor and the Queen trying to get you to fall for their bull-crap, that it is them and them alone who is bringing you good fortune. How dishonest and deceitful? The main ingredient in the CZMA is that you cannot block visual corridors and public access to the water. You can only enhance them for now and future generations. You don’t have to go any further than right here in Rockaway to see the violations. The Duane Reade building is built across Beach 116 Street blocking visual corridors and public access to the water. Do you think that the Emperor’s right hand man, Daniel Doctoroff who is partners with Duane Reade had anything to do with obtaining permits to put up that building? That’s one good example of how the Emperor is protecting the waterfronts for you. Go down to Reverend Floyd Flake’s project, Arverne by the Sea, and take a good look at how the Emperor closed off city streets and allowed Rev. Flake’s developers to build on top of them, blocking visual corridors and public access to the Water, for about ten blocks long. I grant you Rev. Flake’s project was started long before the Emperor came to power, but he knew all about building across the public streets before the building started. As for the Waterfront Committee, they should all go up the river for a stretch with the Emperor and the Queen leading the way.

Bottom line,

The only reason the Emperor bought a third term was to corral as much as the waterfront as he can to develop and privatize for the super rich.

JOHN BAXTER
