Rockaway Little League Opens 2010 Campaign On Saturday

The Rockaway Little League season began this month. The Rockaway Little League season began this month. The Rockaway Little League will celebrate their opening day this Saturday with festivities and baseball games galore.

The day will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Fort Tilden. Parents and little leaguers are invited to participate for the parade, which starts at 10 a.m.

The opening ceremonies will be held with invited local officials among those on hand. A new flag pole will also be dedicated. Congressman Anthony Weiner will be throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.

“Opening day of little league season is always one of my favorite times of the year,” Weiner said. “We should be doing everything we can to promote these little leagues. I’ve been warming up my pitching arm in preparation.”

Once the ceremony is ended, the first of many games featuring boys and girls, ages 5-15, will play in various softball or baseball divisions.

The Rockaway Little League will also host the first season of the Challenger Division. It was established to enable boys and girls with physical and mental challenges, ages 5-18, or up to age 22 if still enrolled in high school, to enjoy the game of baseball.

Also taking place throughout the day is the Aquafina Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit and Run contest. It’s an exciting skills competition for kids between the ages of 7-14 that provides boys and girls the chance to advance through four levels of competition. They will be judged by their pitching accuracy, hitting distance and accuracy, along with testing your speed at running the bases.

The high scorers in each round advance to the regional round. Regional winners compete at CitiField for a chance to win an all expense paid trip to compete in the national championship at the 2010 All-Star Game in Anaheim.

For individuals and families who attend, the Rockaway Little League will have eight super-sized inflatables, a dunk tank, cotton candy machine, and a popcorn machine. A DJ will also be present. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for kids.

Armbands purchased in advance are $15 for adults and $5 for kids and Armbands purchased at the door are $20 for adults and $10 for kids and senior citizens with a $60 cap per family.
