A warm Saturday afternoon greeted double-dutch teams that gathered from around the city, Long Island, and upstate to take part in the 30th Annual Rockaway Double Dutch Championships. It was held at the Sorrentino Recreational Center on Saturday, April 10.

The event was created in 1980 by Stan Brown, who is the founder and coach of the Far Rockaway based world champion Double Dutch group, Stan’s Pepper Steppers. The gym was packed with 150 participants and their respective teams from Belleport, Albany, Brooklyn, Bronx, and other areas of Queens. Awards were handed out for jumpers who competed in divisions from the third grade up to high school.

The Pepper Steppers and other teams who competed shared first place honors in many categories.

The winners will now advance to jump at the New York State Championships, which will be held on May 15 at Law Enforcement High School on Guy Brewer Boulevard starting at 9 a.m.
