Local Census Participation Below National Average
The participation of many of Rockaway’s communities in the national 2010 Census has fallen below the participation rate of the nation as a whole, which is currently at 60 percent, according to Census Bureau officials this week.
With the nation at 60 percent participation and New York State at 54 percent, Rockaway’s neighborhoods fall far behind (see chart on this page).
Arverne has the worst participation rate of all Rockaway communities at 30 percent, as of April 5.
Bayswater follows closely behind with a 32 percent participation rate.
Only three of Rockaway’s sections even touch the 50 percent mark. Those are Neponsit, with the best participation rate on the peninsula (57 percent), Breezy Point (51 percent) and the Dayton Towers buildings along the beachfront (50 percent).
April 1 was National Census Day, which marks the date when the Census Bureau hoped to have all forms mailed back. However, a large percentage of the questionnaires nationwide still have not been mailed back. A second form was mailed recently for those who may not have received it or simply forgot to mail it back.
Residents who fail to participate through mail will have a census worker visit their home starting May 1 through July 10 to take tally of those unaccounted for in each household.
