RBVL Holds First Pre-Season Meeting For 2010

By Joe McGivney

Preparations for the Summer 2010 Rockaway Beach Volleyball League are underway. Patty Moule will again lead her troops into battle and try to top last year’s very successful campaign.

Each year, the first order of business is to find out which teams will be returning and which will not. Last year, 8 divisions with a record-setting 60 teams of different playing levels were fielded.

On Thursday evening, March 25, team captains and representatives convened at 8 p.m. for the first meeting of the year at Kerry Hills Pub. After eight minutes of opening remarks, captains delivered their full rosters and $100 deposits to insure a spot in the league. Prospective new teams also brought money and rosters and were placed on a waiting list for the upcoming season.

If any veteran teams fold or fail to fulfill their obligations in a timely manner, new teams will be pulled from the waiting list to fill out the league. So far, all but one squad has signed up for the sport they all love so much. Many players came out of hibernation and joined the festivities as well. It’s always a sure sign of spring when both Punxatawny Phil and Rockaway Rusty see their shadow and come out to play.

The general feedback on the 2009 season has been very positive and the league is grateful for everyone’s input and assistance. Always feel free to voice any of your personal likes and dislikes. We are always striving for improvement.

Prospective new referees should contact Patty or Denise if they would like to be worked into our rotation. You do not need to be a certified ref to work in the RBVL. In fact, many refs have been quite successful with a strong playing background (college and high school) and limited referee experience.

Captains can do us a big favor by emailing their vital information (name, address, phone numbers, e-mail address, team name) and the information for an alternate (or two) from their team. If the information is the same as last year, nothing needs to be done. However, if they have a new e-mail address or have elected a new captain, the info should be sent to jmcgivney2@ nyc.rr.com as soon as possible; they don’t have to wait for the meeting. We’re looking to improve the speed and accuracy of our announcements and information dissemination. (Impressive, no?)

You can mark a few additional special dates on your calendars already. We will hold the second and final meeting before the season on Thursday, April 22 at 8:00 p.m. at Kerry Hills. Uniform orders and payment in full ($650) is due at that time. Any changes to your initial roster should be noted as well.

Wednesday, May 26 will be our first night of volleyball at the beach. It will be a practice night for all and uniforms and schedules will be given out at that time. Hopefully the weather will cooperate as it did last year. Wednesday, June 2 will be opening day and play will continue every Wednesday until August 14. On that Saturday, the league championships will be played – keep your schedules clear. Every year it’s a blast!

Finally, it’s never too early to plan for the RBVL Awards Dinner. By popular demand, this year’s celebration will be moved from September to August, which will be a week or so after the playoffs (The tentative date is August 20.) Details will follow shortly.

It will only be 54 days before the “Real Desperate Housewives of NYC” and the “Bachelors” of Rockaway meet on the sands of Riis Park to determine the “Biggest Loser.”

Opening day will arrive quickly and there is much to be done beforehand. If you have any questions before the meeting please call Patty Moule at 917- 613-0908 (Call between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m.). See you on April 22.
