Fascism At Dayton

Dear Editor,

Given the pervasiveness and the depth of corruption in the Rockaways and South Queens – from the embezzlement of prime publicly-owned oceanfront property to the embezzlement of publicly-owned Aqueduct Racetrack to the privatization, profitplundering,

Letters and imposition of rightwing curriculum indoctrination at our elementary, middle, and secondary schools – can it be any surprise that the ready-for-picking, low-hanging, sweet plum of Dayton Beach Park #1 Corp, the Mitchell-Lama state-supported co-op development that is home to 1100 families, comes to the attention of the voracious corruption circle involving Floyd Flake, Charles Schumer, Gregory Meeks, Malcolm Smith, new inductee David Paterson, and minor flunkies Dolores Orr and Jennifer Grady?

The principal objective of the incestuous corruption circle I described above is the servicing of the recipients to whom embezzled public properties are gifted (the recipients eventually kickback some pennies in one form or another). The specific agency though which massive title transferences are being executed is NYC’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development “HPD.” It is HPD which signs the papers under Rudolf Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg, orders giving away, as Coney Island is being lost, TWO MILES of the people’s beachfront to private fast operators with ZERO payment to NYC, with hundreds of millions of dollars of NYC expenditure-support thrown to the operators, and with assurance of twenty years “no taxes” as icing on the giftcake. HPD is working for the land recipients. What the “ The land recipients want a surrounding neighborhood where people are paying the highest rents or maintenance fees possible, so that – “Location, Location, Location” – the land recipients can extract the highest sales prices possible from the customers on whom they dump their pastedtogether cheeseboxes.

Just as HPD whores for the land thieves, the flunkies at Dayton - under nominal HPD oversight – whore for HPD. HPD says “Pump those damn monthly payments up!” and the flunkies find and create excuses for doing so. A latest example of many, many is the rip-down of the perfectcondition fence between the Dayton property and Shore Front Parkway, to be replaced at needless cost, by a new fence (and coincidentally endangering a 45-year old evergreen tree at B82, one of the largest along SFP, that over the years developed a non-destructive dependant relationship with the fence). Similarly, all facebricks on four 13-story buildings, from the ground to the roof, were replaced with lowerquality facebricks; near-perfect condition quality floor tiles in 60 hallways were overlaid with a second new layer and then a third new layer of inferior tiles; 60 collection bins, one on every floor, for segregation and special handling WITHIN OUR PROPERTY of the most dangerous items put in motion each day – namely glass and pieces of glass- were summarily whisked away, without prior notice, on 21 October 2009 after two decades of safety service to the co-op, subjecting residents, visitors, pets, and maintenance staff to new brokenglass hazards and rightful lawsuits; and graveyard-style elephantine concrete tombstones were erected at two entrances.

Objection to mindless money-squandering cannot be raised by Dayton shareholders because all decisionmeetings have been closed to observance, comment, and democratic processes. The prostitutional leadership is unaccountable to the 1100 families that collectively own Dayton; the leadership is in violation of the Dayton Charter; and therefore all of the leadership’s acts of conscious squandering and of good-management sabotage are illegitimate, as are their demands for us to write bigger monthly checks.
