A Devastating Effect
The following letter was written to Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg
Dear Mayor Bloomberg:
I am writing to you regarding New York City’s decision to terminate Ferry Service from Rockaway to Manhattan. This decision will have a devastating effect on the residents of Rockaway that utilize this service.
The Rockaway peninsula is home to the most beautiful and precious natural resources, our beaches and our bay. These waterways are a natural environment for ferry and water travel for the many residents of our community and city.
The implementation of water transportation from Riis Landing was a welcomed addition to our community’s drastically underserved public transportation.
However, it has become apparent that ernest efforts to offer the best possible service, to the most population, at a reasonable cost were not undertaken. The “trial” service that was implemented adhered to a schedule that eliminated many commuters from utilizing the limited service.
Additionally, the limited schedule totally prohibited non-commuters from using the ferry as a transportation alternative.
Utilization of the more than $15 million of federal monies available to purchase ferries for NYC would go a long way in addressing many of these issues and concerns.
I implore you to reconsider your decision to eliminate water transportation to and from Rockaway and implement a ferry service that realistically accommodates the residents’ needs with NYC owned and operated boats.
The residents who commute and the beach visitors who utilize this type of service deserve nothing less.
