McCarthy, Kirk Crowned Ice Champions
Local 15-year olds Mike Kirk and Michael McCarthy recently spent a weekend in Philadelphia for a holiday ice hockey tournament. The boys played for the Merrick-Bellmore IceCats Midget Minor Team in the Long Island Amateur Hockey League. The tourney started off poorly as several teammates had arrived late and the team went on to suffer a 5-4 loss to the team from Howard, Maryland.
That proved to be a blip on the radar as the team improved their performance on the ice. Merrick- Bellmore went on to win four straight games, including a title victory over Reading, Pennsylvania.
Kirk scored a goal and had three assists. He was a physical force on defense and recorded a plus 6 rating on the ice. McCarthy was tenacious on the right wing by recording a plus 5 rating. He scored a goal and had 4 assists.
