Six St. Francis Boys Teams Advance To Sweet 16

The St. Francis Novice girls lost in the CYO Diocesan championship game to St. Adalbert 24-10. The girls fought all game, but were never really in it as the entire team was tired out by the relentless full court pressure displayed by their opponents. The girls had played a great semi-final the previous day by edging Blessed Trinity 18-14.

The girls team was led by Courtney McCool, Lauren Marten, Nicole Gibson, and Maria DiCarlo. The girls tried to feed off the fourth graders, but ran out of gas. After a wonderful CYO season, the girls are turning to the Peggy Boyle Tournament where they already have a victory over St. Patrick’s from Brooklyn.

The Bantam Girls lost a heartbreaker by one point to St. Stanislaus of Maspeth in the semi-finals on Saturday.

The Boys playoffs began and all six St. Francis teams won their first game to advance to the round of 16.

The Pee Wee Blue beat St. Gabriel and then beat St. Kevin this past Saturday. Their next game is a quarterfinal against St. Margaret at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 13 at Corpus Christi. The Pee Wee Gold beat St. Robert before losing to Our Lady of Lourdes in the round of 16.

The Novice squad upended St. Robert while the Bantams defeated St. Anastasia 29-20. Although the St. Francis offense struggled throughout the game, their defense was airtight. Alex Goldberg led the scoring with 8 points. Matt DeCrescenzo added 6 points. Ethan Ruiz provided the defensive spark.

They won their second round playoff defeating Our Lady of Hope 35-18. Alex Goldberg stole the show with his spinning drives to the basket scoring 8 points. However, it was his defense and rebounding that keyed his good performance. John Boyle played his best game of the season, scoring 9 points and controlling the boards. Kyle Connolly was a defensive terror throughout the game.

They will face St. Vincent Ferrer for a third time this year in the quarterfinals on Sunday, March 7 at 1:00 p.m. at Gate of Heaven.

The SFDS Rookies won their first against St. Andrew and next play at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 6 at OLMM against St Stanislaus, St. Joachim and St. Anne. The Intermediates will also play on Saturday, March 6 at 1:45 p.m. against Sacred Heart at Corpus Christi. Sacred Heart defeated St. Robert in their previous game.
