Viola Barnes, 99, a longtime Rockaway resident, died February 23.
Barnes was born on February 5, 1911 in Dothan, Alabama.
Barnes was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Janet Johnson.
She is survived by her lifelong companion, James Brown Jr.; granddaughter, Lorie Ann (Emmanuel) Joseph; great-granddaughter, Monje Debbie Vinnette Joseph; granddaughter, Jacqueline Williams; great-greatgranddaughters, Wandiza (Henry) Williams, Evita (Ansert) LLewlyn and Dione Frederick; great-great-greatgranddaughter, Teyha Johnson; stepdaughters, Juanita (Michael) Brown and Elizabeth Dickerson; stepson, Alan (Sharon) Brown; honorary grandchildren, Alan Curry, Samantha Curry, Aron Brown, Ashley Brown, Aden Brown, Joseph Boose, Jamila Pratt, Jaylyn Dubois and Roderick Mims; and her faithful home attendant of 13 years, Pamela (Sam) Allen; and a host of many relatives and friends. Special recognition to Karen Wellington, Michelle Duncan Daley, Lisa Batson- McKenzie, Juanita Brown and Pam Allen.
Funeral arrangements and memorial service were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney Friendship Chapel, Inwood, New York. Interment remained private.
