Why Close This Park?
The following letter was written to Ms. Carol Ash, Commissioner NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation
Dear Commissioner Ash:
I am writing to you regarding your recent decision to close Bayswater State Park. This park is a welcomed recreational opportunity for many residents of my community, along with visitors from New York City and other areas of New York State.
While I understand that during these fiscally troubling times, cost saving measures must be undertaken and revenue analysis is a major factor in all our budgeting decisions, closing Bayswater Park seems short sighted.
Bayswater State Park is a natural reserve park. It offers a unique fishing location and is home to an outstanding scenic venue in a natural and pristine environment.
The “caretakers” home/office has been closed and “mothballed” for many years. The caretaker position has not been filled and with the exception to new fencing (needed due to the safety hazard that existed) little or no funding has been utilized for Bayswater State Park’s upkeep or enhancement.
I would appreciate it if you inform me as to how much actual savings the closing of Bayswater State Park will realize for New York State.
It seems the small investment in Bayswater State Park would provide recreation and enjoyment opportunities for many New York residents whose recreational opportunities are already drastically limited.
Thank you in advance for your time and attention in this regard.
AUDREY I. PHEFFER
