From The Artists Studio
The ticklings of spring are rising from the earth below and enveloping us from the skies above – snow is receding (yes, I know there may be more to come, but it will disappear quickly); the skies are brighter for longer; the birds are trilling to one another; the air has an open, sweet aroma; and I am finally breaking out of my threeweek bacteria and virus-ridden haze. The microbish Jabberwock has been slain, Callooh, Callay!
New for Spring at the RA of A:
Call for Artists: “Forty Shades of Green”: Incorporating both the color green and the idea of green (as in recycled, renewed and renewable) this juried exhibition seeks works in any and all mediums. The many varieties of green and the breadth and depth of the green ethos are the subject; the many unique and vivid ways artists portray this will bring the theme to life. Entry forms and prospectuses will be available at the RAA office at 260 Beach 116 Street, the RAA galleries in Fort Tilden and can be downloaded from www.rockawayartistsalliance. org. RAA’s after-school program, kidsm-ART, is now open on Mondays in Building T-149 in Fort Tilden, thanks to Councilman Eric Ulrich’s allocation of discretionary funds for the program. The new schedule will continue through May 3. Come join us. And feel free to call Councilman Ulrich at 718-738-1083 to thank him for his support.
New Classes for Children and Adults: Guitar for Kids: Critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Greg Trooper will be teaching guitar to interested youth. Trooper has played with the likes of John Prine and Billy Bragg. His songs have been recorded by Steve Earle and others. Lessons will include basic chords, playing guitar games and learning a few tunes – that moms and dads will recognize! Honest! $90 for six weeks – students bring their own guitars. Wednesdays, 4 – 5 p.m. Start date: TBA. Location: Building T-149, Fort Tilden. Maximum number of students: six. Call RAA (718-474-0861) to reserve a spot.
Click! Digital Photography: (for children) Accomplished digital photography instructor Arianna Rose will again be teaching the subject to children this spring. For a third time, this muchanticipated class will put digital cameras in the students’ hands. Rose will offer them instruction in the techniques of photographing landscapes, portraits, abstracts, action shots and more. This has been one of RAA’s most popular class selections. $150 for six weeks – all supplies and materials (including camera loan, if necessary) included. Date and time: TBA. Location: Building T-149, Fort Tilden. Call RAA to reserve a spot.
Experiencing Watercolors with Robert Bainbridge: (for adults) RAA is pleased to announce highly regarded watercolorist and professional artist Robert Bainbridge’s watercolor class for adults. Bainbridge has created a class that will serve students of all levels and will include exercises, such as painting monochromes, that will familiarize neophytes with the materials and the medium. More advanced students can expect individual instruction in techniques that will help achieve their intended goals. Classes will be evenings, two hours in length. $20 per class/$75 for 4 classes/$ 140 for 8 classes. Date and time: TBA Location: sTudio 6, RoCA, Fort Tilden Call RAA to reserve a spot.
