Thank You For That Editorial

Dear Editor,

Thank you for your recent editorial on the Supreme Court’s ruling that gave private corporations the right to make unlimited contributions (lobbying and cash) to political candidates. We all have reason to be dismayed because of the additional power this can give private, wealthy interests to control almost every aspect of our lives and our children’ futures.

But dismay doesn’t have to lead to despair. Where would we be if those who worked for civil rights and fought against debtors’ prisons, slavery, and child labor had not continued their struggle for what they knew was right?

To counter the Court’s decisions, legislation has been proposed: FENA (The Fair Election Now Act). This bill allows candidates to run highly competitive races that rely on small donations and limited public funding. A voluntary system, it would enable voters to play an important role in elections. The bill already has more than 110 bipartisan cosponsors and meets with the approval and promises of support from many of our Congressional Representatives.

Congressman Anthony Weiner who has shown such courage and leadership has repeatedly affirmed his approval

Letters and support of campaign finance reform, and declares that he will vote in favor of FENA should it come before him on the House floor or from seats on House committees. We must urge him to do more than wait, but instead, step forward to cosponsor FENA, the best counter action to corporations’ financial control of our elections and democracy.

“We cannot let ourselves become ‘we, the people of the corporations of America.”
