Broad Channel Bits

All the rain this past week washed away the piles of snow that were still lying around the edges and corners of the streets. The leftover snow was really dirty looking, so the rain was fortunate!

Broad Channel Athletic Club/ Jamaica Bay Little League will hold its final 2010 registration for Baseball, Softball and T-Ball on Friday, February 26 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, February 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the meeting room in the St. Virgilius School building; entrance to the room is in a separate section of the building on Church Road. Registration fees are as follows: CYO/Baseball and Softball is $125 per child; Instructional and T-Ball is $65 per child. Discounts for families with three or more children will be given. The first two children are regular price. Children joining CYO Program must have been born in 2002 or earlier while the In- House Program is for age 3 and older; children must be 3 by May 1, 2010. On Saturday, February 27 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, enjoy a short indoor presentation and then head outdoors for a stroll to the West Pond in the Winter Waterfowl Walk.

Bring binoculars or a scope if you have one. Dress for the outdoors. Sign up at 718-318-4340. BCVFD presents its 105th Ann-ual Officers Installation Dance on Saturday, February 27 at the North Channel Yacht Club from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

On Sunday, March 7 the VFW will be hosting a brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with your choice of fresh eggs, waffles, pancakes or a garbage omelet with bacon or sausage. Adults cost $6 and kids are half price; adults get a bloody mary or screwdriver; kids get juice. Also served is cake and coffee or tea.

Mark the Calendar! The Broad Channel Pre-K will be holding an open house on Wednesday, March 10 from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Parents are welcome to come, bring their children, and check out the program and meet the new teacher.

Registration for new students will be on Thursday, April 8 at 6:30 p.m. The school is located at 102 Noel Road in the Christ Presbyterian Church.

A two-session Defensive Driving Course will be given on Wednesday, March 10 and Thursday, March 11 from 7 to 10 p.m. in the school building at 16 Noel Road in Broad Channel, in the lunchroom.

By taking this course, you can receive a 10 percent reduction on your car insurance for 3 years or up to 4 points off of your license. No test will be given. Fee is $60. If you attended the course in March, 2007, your certificate expires in March. Payment in full guarantees a seat — they are unable to hold a seat without payment. The course is sponsored by St. Virgilius Parish.

Christ Presbyterian Church will present Bingo in the church hall on Noel and Church Roads on Friday, March 12. Doors open at 6 p.m. Early Bird is at 6:30 p.m. Bingo starts at 7 p.m. Donation is $5. Coffee, tea and cake will be served.

A thank you to all of those neighbors who showed up at the Church’s recent Friday night Bingo!

The 7th Annual Jane Fuller Memorial Brunch for Cancer Care will take place on Sunday, March 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the American Legion Hall. On the menu will be eggs any style, omelets, pancakes, freedom toast served with potatoes, bacon, ham or sausage. All are welcome.

In the visitor center in the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is an exhibit of about 50 of Jeffrey Rabkin’s haiku poems about the winter and cold weather. The exhibit ends Sunday, February 28.

We even had three families who brought their little ones in their carriages— all bundled up! It goes to show that — no matter what — the people of Broad Channel are great supporters of Christ Presbyterian Church. All had a great time.”

The scheduled MTA hearings on the toll rebate for residents of Rockaway and Broad Channel are on Tuesday, March 2 at Sheraton LaGuardia East Hotel, 135-20 39 Avenue, Flushing starting at 6 p.m.

A free bus ride to the hotel is available. The bus will stop at Noel Road and Cross Bay Boulevard, to pick up residents who have called; it will leave Rockaway at 4:15 p.m. If you want a bus seat, call 718-945-1216.

The future of the old Schmitt’s Marina at West 19 Road may be determined by current Broad Channel residents if NYC Parks considers the ideas for improvement of the land from them worth acting on.

The property is about nine acres of land. Parks called the former marina a “currently dormant and underused asset.” Proposals for revitalization of the land must be received by Parks no later than 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 31. There will be a tour of the property on Tuesday, March 9 at 11 a.m.
