Bishop Kearney’s High School track captain Meghan Hayes’ (Breezy Point) third place finish in the 1000 meter race at the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) city championship last weekend qualified her for the New York State indoor championship. That will be held at Cornell University on March 6.

Hayes ran a personal best of 3:05.2 in the 5 lap race with a stunning kick in the last 50 meters to narrowly miss second place honors by four tenths of a second.

This will be Hayes’ second trip this year to the state championship. She previously represented the CHSAA league at the cross country state championship.

The Bishop Kearney coaches described Hayes’ achievement as a tremendous accomplishment.

They wish her congratulations and best of luck.

The Kearney freshmen sprint medley team comprised of Danielle Punzina, Katie McMannon, Brigid (The Soup) Campbell and Krysta (Marine Park Glider) Cosenza also shined at the CHSAA championship with a sixth place finish and new school record in a time of 5:02.2. Cosenza, who was the anchor leg of the medley team, posted a sensational time of 2:39 for the 800 meter leg.

It was a great job by the ladies and the coaches wished them continued success.
