George Major Hines
George Major Hines, 69, a longtime Rockaway resident, died January 13.
Hines was born on October 23, 1940 in Brooklyn, New York and worked as a chef, living in Rockaway for more than 40 years. He also worked as an Auto Mechanic at Smith Ford in Norwich, New York and eventually, became the first black man to own his own Auto Mechanic shop in Oxford, New York with the famous logo, “Hines Body Shop… We Meet By Accident!”
He is survived by wife, Goldie; children, Derrick L. Hines of Troy New York, Wanda L. Hines of Rochester New York, Dawn M. Engram of Newport News, Virginia; grandchildren, Tiana, Seth, Danika and Kyle; mother, Mable Kelly; brother, James Kelly; sisters, Rosetta Kelly and Galela-Shaun Johnson; daughter-in-law, Fawn Hines; cousins, Barbara Hines-Roach and Thomasina Neal; and a host of nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral arrangements and memorial service were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney Friendship Chapel, Inwood, New York. Disposition took place at St. Michael’s Crematory, East Elmhurst, New York.
