Weiner Kicks Off Swap Out

Representative Anthony Weiner, a member of the House Energy and Commerce committee, announced the kick-off of the “Great Appliance Swap Out” program, which will provide rebates of up to $555 to New Yorkers who trade in their old appliances for new, more energy efficient models. The program, which will dole out nearly $17 million in rebates in New York State alone, will run from February 12 to February 21. “This program, which is modeled after the successful ‘Cash for Clunkers’ auto rebates, is an example of the federal stimulus bill at its best,” Weiner said. “It will help green the environment and boost the economy, and I hope that New Yorkers will take advantage of this opportunity.”

A variety of appliances are eligible for rebates. If New Yorkers trade in their old appliances and purchase products that meet Energy Star standards, they stand to receive: $75 for refrigerators ($105 if a person can document they recycled their old appliance) $75 for washing machines (or $100 if the old appliance is recycled) $50 for freezers ($75 if the old appliance is recycled)

Additionally, New Yorkers who purchase at least three new appliances (combination must include refrigerator, washing machine, and dishwasher) are eligible for a $555 rebate. To qualify for this extra rebate, the new appliances must meet higher energy standards set by the Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE). The CEE is a non-profit, public benefit corporation that works with its members to promote the use of energy-efficient products and services. CEE members include electric, gas and water utilities, research and development organizations, state energy offices, and regional energy programs. The CEE is financially supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. Weiner voted for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which provides $300 million to fund the Cash for Appliances program.
