I Am Dumbfounded

Dear Editor,

Your front page publication of Michael Finnegan’s criminal activities are not only a year late but showed a startling lack of journalistic integrity. His former wife is a friend of mine, and I am dumbfounded that you would publish her home address in regard to a situation in which she is a victim as well.

Mr. Finnegan does not live at the address you published, and has not for some time. He does not live in this state. Perhaps the most basic tenet of journalism is to research and present the facts. This obviously did not occur here.

You have an obligation to present your readers with the truth. Not only did you fail in that, you failed in a way that endangered innocents. This debacle is a shameful example of the very worst of journalism and a stunning breach of ethical standards. Printing her home address is an unconscionable breach of her privacy, as it opens the family up to possible harassment and does not serve the public good in the slightest.
