FR Man Charged With DWI, Vehicular Manslaughter

A Far Rockaway man has been charged with manslaughter following a crash that killed a passenger in his car in Cedarhurst last Saturday morning, according to Nassau police.

Gehlert Barrios, 20, of Far Rockaway, was driving his 2004 Nissan southbound on Rockaway Turnpike when he rear-ended a 2009 Ford van near the corner of Rugby Road at 4:30 a.m., police said.

The accident killed Anthony Morales, 30, also of Far Rockaway, who was riding in the backseat of the Nissan. He was rushed to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, but was pronounced dead at 9:35 a.m.

The 21-year-old passenger riding in the front seat of the Nissan and the 50-year-old driver of the Ford suffered neck and back injuries and are being treated at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital.

Barrio has been charged with seconddegree manslaughter, second-degree vehicular manslaughter, seconddegree assault, reckless endangerment, reckless driving and driving while intoxicated. Both vehicles were impounded for brake and safety tests.

He was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Sunday. Bail was set at $200,000 bond, $100,000 cash.
