Late Goal Helps St. Edmund Prep Defeat Xavier
The St. Edmund Prep Eagles beat Xavier High School 3-2 in a Catholic High School Hockey League (CHSHL) match on January 29 at Abe Stark Arena in Coney Island.
The Eagles got on the board first on a booming slap shot from the point by junior defenseman Anthony Galeano that blistered past the goalie through a screen set up by senior Ryan Rayder.
St. Edmund Prep took a two goal lead when sophomore C.J. Tortillo faked out the goalie and slid the puck in behind him on a short breakaway. Xavier refused to give up and scored the next two goals to tie the game early in the third period before Eagle sophomore Anthony Catroneo scored with five and a half minutes left for the game winner.
Rockaway’s Mike Cerone played a strong game centering St. Edmund Prep’s third line and controlling much of the play when they were on the ice. Other locals that helped the Eagles’ cause were Broad Channel’s Ray Recco and Johnny Wagner and Rockaway’s Kieran Rogers and Timmy Horgan, but the star of the game was goaltender Donald Marchetti.
The sophomore net minder made one brilliant save after another to help St. Edmund Prep hold onto victory. The win is their 10th of the season against four losses and keeps the Eagles in first place.
St. Edmund Prep will take on St. Francis Prep on Friday, February 5 at 10:00 p.m. in Coney Island at Abe Stark Arena. The game is “Senior Night” for the Eagles as they get to honor their senior players including Joe Calabrese, Sal Annunziata and Rockaway’s Ryan Rayder and Tim Horgan.
