Sylvia Wells-Swift, 89, a longtime Rockaway resident, died January 20.
Wells-Swift was born on June 8, 1920 in Port Spain, Trinidad and worked as a nurse’s assistant. She was a member of Solid Rock S.D.A. Church. She was the mother of 13 children and migrated to the United States in 1968. At the age of 55 she furthered her education and became a Certified Nursing Assistant and graduated at the head of her class.
Wells-Swift was preceded in death by her parents, Iris Wells and Arthur Shockness; husbands, Harrison Swift and Cecil Harris; sister, Olga Wells; two children at childbirth; daughter, Ingrid; son, Ivan Frankie Wells; uncle, William Law; and aunt, Effie Burnham. .
She is survived by her children, Randolph Wells of the U.S Virgin Islands, Kenneth Wells, Joan Wells-Moses and Anthony Wells, all of Trinidad, Earl Wells, Dianne Wells-Williams-Nee Harris, Janice Wells, Fidel Harris and Maria Gillian Harris all of the United States; 42 grandchildren, 25 greatgrandchildren, sisters, Carmen Ramdeen and Pearl Blake; six nieces, one nephew, cousins, Martin and Germaine, and a host of friends.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney Friendship Chapel, Inwood, New York. A memorial service took place at Solid Rock S.D.A Church, Far Rockaway. Interment took place at Pinelawn Cemetery, Farmingdale, New York.
