What’s Wrong With This Picture?
I just finished reading the January 29 front page reporting the statutory rape plea deal of local music teacher Michael Finnegan, and I was appalled.
The 40-year-old convicted child rapist slithered off to Florida and is allowed to live there with his family while he attends pervert rehab. He didn’t even return to Rockaway for his sentencing. His former address is printed in The Wave and an “anonymous defender” is quoted as saying something so outrageous that it should never have been in print.
I don’t know where to begin.
First of all, sex offenders are criminals and should not be allowed the privilege of rehab. He committed a crime and he should be sentenced to jail, where, hopefully, he would get a taste of his own medicine.
Then, I’d like to know why The Wave published his former address. Why should the current residents be subjected to being linked in any way to this crime? The Wave should have published his current address in Florida instead.
I am sure that any of us would like to send him our regards. “ Last, but not least, to his “anonymous defender,” you are ignorant be-yond words. A fifteen-year-old child cannot legally consent to vote, marry, buy cigarettes or liquor. She cannot join the military, drop out of school or drive a car. I was repulsed to hear you say that “the affair was consensual. Finnegan made an error in judgment and should not be punished.”
I wish you had the guts to stand by your statement, so that I could be sure not to let my children anywhere near you.
It’s uneducated remarks like those that allow predators like Michael Finnegan to exist.
