Councilmen Get New Committee Assignments
Councilman James Sanders Jr., who is serving his third term in office, will head the powerful Civil Service and Labor Committee. He also chairs the Committee on Veteran Affairs.
Councilman Eric Ulrich, who was just elected to his first full term on the Council, can hold no committee chairs because Republicans are in the minority on all committees. He was appointed, however, as a member of several important committees, including the Civil Service and Labor Committee, the Education Committee, the Housing and Buildings Committee, the Public Safety Committee, the Transportation Committee and the Waterfronts Committee.
Ulrich was appointed by his party as the Minority Whip, which entitles him to a $5,000 stipend, but he has announced that he will donate that stipend to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
“It gives me great privilege and honor to fight for and represent the voice of the hard working citizens of New York City,” Sanders said. “I look forward to working together with Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the unions for the betterment of our city.”
“I am truly grateful for the trust and confidence my colleagues have placed in me,” Ulrich said. “These committee assignments will allow me to better serve my constituents and the communities within my district.”
