St. Edmund Prep Hockey Beats Xaverian High School
A local presence helped the St. Edmund Prep Eagles hockey team beat the Xaverian Clippers 7-2 in Coney Island at Abe Stark arena on Saturday, January 23 in a Catholic High School Hockey League (CHSHL) match.
The game was tightly played for the first 30 minutes. The Eagles held a 4- 2 lead but were being out shot by the Clippers going into the third period. St. Edmund took immediate control as the period started, putting on relentless pressure from the faceoff.
Co-captain Joe Calabrese was the most dominant player on the ice and scored on the opening shift of the period. The goal finished off a spectacular hat trick for the senior. The Eagles took over the game from there, out shooting Xaverian 17-1 in the final period.
Rockaway’s Ryan Rayder scored an insurance goal for the Eagles midway through the period and sophomore CJ Tortillo scored a beautiful breakaway shorthanded goal to ice the game. Junior assistant captain Anthony Galeano was rock solid on the blue line defensively and added a goal and three assists. Senior goaltender Sal Annunziata played extremely well between the pipes stopping 24 shots.
Broad Channel’s Johnny Wagner and Ray Recco along with freshman Nick Zalini kept the puck in the offensive zone all night long and kept Xaverian on their heels. Rockaway’s Kieran Rogers played a strong left wing hitting everything that was in site and Tim Horgan played his wing well.
The win catapulted St. Edmund Prep into first place in the CHSHL B division. It also marked a season sweep over longtime Brooklyn rival Xaverian High School.
The Eagles did take a devastating loss when junior center Matt Schmalix broke his arm in the first period and appears to be lost for the remainder of the season.
St. Edmund Prep will take on Xavier Friday, January 29 at 10:00 p.m. at Abe Stark Arena in Coney Island or you can follow the Eagles progress on the league website at www.chshl.net.
