St. Camillus/St. Virgilius C.Y.O Basketball Update
On January 2, the St. Camillus/St. Virgilius Cadet (ninth grade) boys’ basketball team faced O.L.P.H on the road. The game was close throughout, but S.C.V. pulled off a 47-44 victory.
Sean O’Connell led the scoring with 16 points, Markel French had 15 points, Tyquan Murray had 8 points, Kevin Magee chipped in 5 points and Shakury Reynolds had 3 points.
After a 3-week hiatus the team returned to the court on January 23, against St. Rose of Lima at St. Rose. S.C.V. came away with a lopsided 58-24 victory after a balanced offensive output. French led the scoring with 21 points, O’Connell scored 11 points, Magee had 10 points. Anthony LaPorta and Reynolds each had 6 points. Keith Goldberg and Murray had 4 points and 2 pts respectively.
On the following day, S.C.V. faced off against St. Thomas Apostle at home. St. Camillus defeated Apostle 52-43 with Reynolds leading the offense with 16 points, Murray had 15 points, French had 13 points and O’Connell had 7 points.
The ninth grade squad is playing well despite starting players missing games due to high school basketball commitments. As the season winds down, the coaches look forward to the team being at full strength as they gear up for the C.Y.O playoffs and the St. Thomas Apostle tournament.
On January 5, the S.C.V. Tyro boys kept their winning streak going with a 55-35 win over St. Stan’s. The team was led by Warren Saylor Jr. and Ismail Abdullah who scored 14 points each and Jyshawn Allen, who scored 10 points. On January 10, the S.C.V. Tyros improved their record to 7-0 with a big 62-36 win over St. Thomas Apostle. The team was led by big man Abdullah who scored 21 points along with Allen’s 17 points and Scott Appelman, who contributed with 10 points. Andrew Thomas also had a great game as he had 10 assists and a few big steals.
On January 22, the S.C.V. Tyro boys defeated St. Mary Gate of Heaven by the score of 57-37. Allen led the team with 19 points. Abdullah chipped in with 15 points and Kareem Padgett had 8 points. The entire team played great that night to beat one of the top teams in their division by 20 points.
The following day January 23 the squad traveled to the second place St Pancras and walked away with a 54-49 win in overtime. Despite being an early game and a hard place to play, the boys still managed to win the tight game.
Warren Saylor Jr. dominated the game as he scored 23 big points. Abdullah 13 points and Allen 9 points also helped the scoring load. Mike McGinn played an excellent game grabbing 20 rebounds and playing great defense.
On January 24, the Tyro boys beat St Matthias 56-42 and finished their weekend with three wins in 3 days. Saylor Jr. led the charge with 19 points and Allen had 11 points.
Abdullah chipped in with 9 points and McGinn added 6 points and a lot of big re-bounds. The team is currently in first place with a 10-0 record and will host Our Lady of Trust and St. Margaret on Saturday and Sunday. Both games are at 4:00 p.m.
