SFDS Bantams, Rookies Win First Round CYO Playoff Games

The Girls CYO Basketball playoffs began this weekend for St. Francis de Sales. The Bantams and Rookies won while the Pee Wee Gold and Intermediates took tough losses.

The SFDS Rookie Girls opened the playoffs against St. Gregory. Led by Madison Efron, who scored 13 points on her 13th birthday, SFDS went on to win by a score of 31-17. The girls were in a festive mood as they sang “Happy Birthday” to Efron before the game and were able to celebrate after their win.

The Rookie Girls play again this Sunday, 3:15 p.m. at R/A against either St. Gabriel or St. Luke. The Bantams face Our Lady of Snows this Sat-urday, 2:45 p.m. at St. Gabriel.

The Pee Wee Blue and Novices both had byes last week. The Pee Wees will play at 1:15 p.m. on Saturday at Corpus Christi against St. Mary Winfield. The Novices are also playing at Corpus Christi on Saturday, facing Our Lady of Mercy at 3:45 p.m.

St. Francis de Sales’ bantam girls were victorious in their first playoff game as they defeated Sacred Heart Glendale 38-26. Just a few weeks earlier in the season SFDS had lost a tough one to Sacred by a score of 17-16.

De Sales’ half time lead was 20-8 as their opponents tried to break the extremely tough full court press thrown out them by the Blue and Gold.

SFDS’ lead would grow and entering the fourth they found themselves with a commanding 32-15 lead.

The press was pulled and SH did outscore De Sales 11-7 in the final quarter.

Starters Tess Gallagher (10 points, 8 steals), Ryan Ward (6 points, 6 steals, and 10 tips), Kathryn Gibson (14 points, 7 steals), Shannon Rochelle (7 points and 6 steals at “safety”) and Jenna McCann (3 blocks, 5 steals in a foul-out effort) all had their best cohesive game to date.

SFDS takes on Our Lady Snow this Saturday in the second round.

It was a relatively quiet weekend for the boys, which was highlighted by the annual trip to South Windsor, Connecticut.

The Rookies began the day by jumping out to a quick lead only to fritter it away as the hosts came back and won.

The Intermediates were shorthanded but still pulled off the win with spirited, gutsy play.

The Novices rallied in the third quarter to tie the game going into the final period, but ran out of gas as South-ington won.

The Bantam game was close throughout and they nearly pulled out the win, but a buzzer beating shot just missed and they lost to South Windsor by one. They are all looking forward to the return games at St. Francis on February 13.

The boys swim team pulled off a strong third place finish at the Diocesan Championship ‘A’ Meet, while the Girls began their season on Friday night.

The SFDS volleyball teams also began their season on Saturday and continue this weekend; including games at St. Francis this Saturday at 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Preparations for the 12th Annual Peggy Boyle Memorial Basketball Tour-nament are underway.

The tournament will begin on February 20 and run through March 20. More details will follow in The Wave as the tournament approaches.
