Josephine Francis, 84, a longtime Rockaway resident, died January 4.
Francis was born in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas on October 13, 1925. She later moved to Rockaway and worked as a school teacher for 40 years. She was a lifelong member of the Memorial Moravian Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, a youth leader and as a member of several organizations, including the choir, the board of helpers and King’s Daughters and Sons. In addition, she taught the evening program at the Department of Education, preparing students to receive their GED Certification. After her retirement, she also taught at the Moravian school.
Francis was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Louise Francis.
She is survived by her nieces, Ina, Elouise and Lorraine; nephews, Ben, Ted, Henry and James; great-nephews, Vernon, Anthony C. Harold Jr., Anthony S, Allen, Thaddeus and Steve; great-nieces, Linda, Peggy and Antoinette; and dozens of great-great nieces and nephews, dozens of cousins and many loving friends and families.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney Friendship Chapel, Inwood, New York. A memorial service took place at Grace Moravian Church, Springfield Gardens, New York. Interment took place at Rosedale Cemetery, Linden, New Jersey.
