Historical Views of the Rockaways

A Classic Souvenir Photo from Rockaway Beach
From The Rockaway Museum Commentary by Emil Lucev, Curator Dedicated To The Memory Of Leon S. Locke

This old souvenir photo postcard is one of the most cherished in my collection. The first glance makes you chuckle or laugh at the couple who look so serious and stiff that they might crack! A second glance makes you wonder if the couple are a mother and son, a sister and younger brother, newly weds, or Aunt Josie and Uncle Clyde from Toledo! What’s your guess?

The hat on the woman is a gem and she is wearing eyeglasses that secure themselves to the bridge of her nose… like an old-time schoolteacher! The letter ‘K’ is missing from the front of the early flying machine prop…and hey! …I know who they are – the Wright brother and sister!
