The Missing Doctrine On Abortion

Dear Editor,

1) In the December 4 edition of The Wave it was asked in Changes in Catholic Church? “Must good and decent Catholics be branded as Pro-Choice or Pro-Life before they can recognize the sacraments? By Richard J. Veneziano

2) In the January 1, 2010 edition of The Wave Donna Marie Doherty outlined the duties of Bishop Thomas Tobin’s duties.

In no uncertain terms, and as a Catholic, here lies the truth for every Catholic. This is espoused doctrine; moral in nature, humane in purpose. It is brief, topical and relevant.

In response to Richard J. Veneziano:

The answer is a Big Fat YES. No Bishop, Priest, Deacon or Lay Catholic can espouse any doctrine that permits abortion. It is contrary to the moral law and an egregious attempt at subverting the faith. One cannot be Pro- Choice and be Catholic. From the very beginning the Catholic Church has always taught that Abortion is a grave moral evil. The Second Vatican Council declared: “Life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception.” Abortion and Infanticide are abominable crimes. Every civil society must recognize the inalienable right to life for every human being. God’s first commandment to Adam and Eve was to increase and multiply. Abortion has always been condemned by the church since Apostolic times. Pope Paul VI wrote about “respect for human life” An abortionist subverts those rights. Why should such a low value be placed on human life? The abortionist or politician has no regard for the well being of the mother if through tools, poisons, instrumentations and laws, disturb, distort and radically expunge the child from existence. Church doctrine is about the Defense of Life – care for the innocent. It is the duty of the Catholic Bishop to teach these moral truths. There is no fine line – an abortionist’s willful destruction of the human fetus is not of a “potential life” as many would have you believe but a “life with potential!” Fashionable ideas in our age categorizing the fetus that up until a certain period is not endowed with vitality (hence not a human being) rather, this doctrine is a cloak, a disguise for their guilt, solace amidst roving disgrace for a profession whose practice has always been about healing the sick and caring for the dying. This is a Theological no-brainer. The genocide of abortion does not preserve the human race, rather, destroys it. What’s in the womb? A human cannot be made human if it were not human already. Divine law and natural reason exclude all direct killing of a human fetus. How can the medical profession permit such barbarous acts? This is moral deformity and completely retards the growth of the human family. Our Divine Author will hold to account the wicked at the day of Judgment – “thou shalt not kill.” One, therefore, cannot rationalize abortion. A Catholic cannot commune with God and partake of the sacrament but should know that with open arms the church invites all the faithful to the sacrament of reconciliation and divine counsel as quickly as possible.
