BC Park Planned For Former Marina Site

By Nicholas Briano

The site of the former Schmitt’s Marina, that is now in possession of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, will one day become a waterfront park in Broad Channel. The site of the former Schmitt’s Marina, that is now in possession of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, will one day become a waterfront park in Broad Channel. The site of the former Schmitt’s Marina in Broad Channel is slated to be come a community park, officials said, making this the second such announcement of a community park in less than two weeks.

Although the plans are in the earliest stages of development, the site located at the end of West 19 Road, is now in possession of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. This ensures the designation of park land use for the site.

No timeline or design plans for the park have been formally submitted, but much like the proposed park announced last week on Beach 88 Street, it will most likely include some sort of public access to Jamaica Bay.

Community Board 14 District Manager Jonathan Gaska says the community will have a strong input during the design process.

“There was a meeting held at Councilman Ulrich’s office before the holiday break with community board officials and representatives from the Broad Channel Civic Association,” Gaska said. “It was agreed on that the community would give a list of what they like and dislike and come up with a plan for the site.”

As a result, the Broad Channel Civic Association will discuss proposed ideas for the park in depth at their next monthly meeting to be held on January 28 at 8 p.m. at the V.F.W hall on Shad Creek Road. The association urges residents to take the time to bring their ideas to the forefront to ensure the park’s design rightfully serves the community’s needs and wants.
