Dolphins Fly High With Win Over Forest Hills

By Elio Velez

Beach Channel boys basketball coach Jim Malone saw a different dynamic from his team throughout the Christmas holidays.

He witnessed a team with a few returning starters from last season and eight newcomers continue to mesh as a unit. A victory over Manhattan Center in the Pro-Am tournament on December 27 was a good sign that his team would continue to provide an inspired effort once the PSAL season resumed.

That did happen against one of the highly regarded teams in their own Queens AA Division. Chris Thomp son scored 19 points and Kevin Marmolejos added 15 as hosts Beach Channel (8-4 overall, 4-3 Queens AA) defeated Forest Hills (5-1), 55-50, on Tuesday.

When the Dolphins lost 62-47 to Van Buren on December 17, Malone wasn’t pleased at the outcome. So throughout the school break, Malone invited some of his former players to practice with his current team.

Our guys practiced against Arthur (Robertson), Yaquis (Moss), Vic (Alvarez). They saw how physical we have to be on the floor. They saw the commitment to play hard,” Malone said.

The Dolphins were down 20-10 in the first quarter, but woke up from their slow start. Thompson scored 10 of his 19 in the second quarter as Beach Channel took a 31-30 lead.

Beach Channel held Forest Hills forward Maurice Harkless, a junior who committed early to attend the University of Connecticut, to only 9 points.

With 36 seconds left, Demitrius Pelt (11 points) scored a basket to give the Dolphins a 3-point lead. After a defensive stop, Beach Channel iced the game when Marmolejos hit two free throws with seconds remaining. “The kids are trying hard. We’re energized by the win.,” said Malone.
