SFDS Christmas Tournament Championships Held This Weekend

The 25th St. Francis de Sales Christmas Basketball Tournament draws to a close this weekend.

The snowstorm of December 19-20 caused an adjustment to the schedule and the championships will now be held on Sunday, January 3. The tournament has once again provided many highlights to the holiday season, and there is much anticipation for this weekend’s games.

St. Francis Gold edged St. Francis Blue to advance to the Subnovice semifinals against Our Lady of Mt. Carmel at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Corpus Christi awaits the winner in Sunday’s 12:00 p.m. championship game.

The Pee Wee semifinals are Saturday at 11:15 a.m. and the championship will be on Sunday at 1:15 p.m. St. Francis Blue and St. Helen have yet to lose while St. Adalbert and St. Francis Gold are still alive. The Novice semifinal on Saturday at 4:45 p.m. pits St. Francis against St. Patrick with the winner getting an opportunity for revenge against Our Lady of Hope on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

The Bantam division still includes St. Francis, St. Stanislaus, St. Joseph and Our Lady of the Angelus. Saturday’s semifinal is at 2:15 p.m. and the championship is Sunday at 3:45 p.m. The Rookie division is extremely strong with St. Francis and St. Vincent Ferrer undefeated and St. Patrick and Blessed Sacrament still alive. The semi-final is Saturday at 3:30 p.m. and the final game will be on Sunday at 5:00 p.m.

Blessed Sacrament has also advanced to the championship game in the Intermediate division. St. Joseph is in the semifinal game on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and will take on either St. Rose or Blessed Trinity. The winner faces Blessed Sacrament on Sunday at 6:15 p.m. to wrap up the tournament.

The special awards ceremony is scheduled for Saturday at 1:30 p.m. after the Intermediate semi-final. The ceremony recognizes the St. Francis players for their sportsmanship and honors many of those who have contributed to the SFDS CYO program. Come to the St. Francis gym (129 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard) this weekend for the best action in town.
