Pepper Steppers Grab Gold, Silver At Double Dutch Championships

The Apollo Theater has become familiar place for Stan’s Pepper Steppers, the renowned double-dutch group from Far Rockaway.

The young boys and girls from the famous group once again outworked and sped past the competition last Saturday afternoon at the 18th Annual Double Dutch Holiday Classic.

Before the heavy snow fell throughout New York City, Stan’s Pepper Steppers lit up the stage by placing first in the singles and doubles speed and compulsory competition.

The Pepper Steppers, who are coached by Stan Brown, won in those categories for the eleventh straight year, defeating double-dutch teams from throughout the United States, and from countries such as Brazil and Japan.

For the fourth straight year, the trio of Laa’Neisha Jones, Peter Alvarez, Katherine Rocha, won in the singles competition, which is open to eighth graders and above to participate.

Mrs. Brown Jumpers did well at the Apollo Theater. Mrs. Brown Jumpers did well at the Apollo Theater. In the doubles competition, Jones, Alavarez and Rocha were joined by Alaisyia Woodard in capturing the doubles category. The Pepper Steppers top group was not the only team to win medals. Their younger group of fourth and fifth grade jumpers Mrs. Brown Jumpers, placed second out of 13 teams in the fourth to fifth grade singles and doubles divisions.

The group, which consists of Shanyia Trader, Yazmine Lewis, Faith Johnson and Myllah Harper, attend PS 40 in Brooklyn and trains with the Pepper Steppers. The team is coached by Linda Brown.
