“Left Brain/Right Brain”: The dynamic of logic and intuition, the interplay of reason and order versus passion and emotion, the sensual and the cerebral. This juried exhibition explores both our rational and structured endeavors (Left Brain) and our creative, emotionally informed pursuits (Right Brain) and also where these hemispheres cross and intersect. Media may include scientific drawing, painting, watercolor, photography, performance, sculpture, mixed media, film and more. Deadline for submissions: May 23, 2010. Dates: June 5 – June 20. Gallery: sTudio 7.

“A Salute To Rockaway”: Whether quiet shore or bustling narrow streets or some spot in between, our Rockaway is a most unique place to be. This juried exhibition welcomes artists far and wide to celebrate in art what Rockaway is to them. Artists may express themselves in photography, paint ing, watercolor, sculpture, assemblage, cartoon, prose, drawing, film, poetry, printmaking, music or any other media. sTudio 7. Deadline: TBA. Dates: July 17 – August 8. Reception: TBA.

ARTSPLASH 2010/InkSplash (invitational): The Rockaway Artists Alliance invites all artists to call up their widest artistic vision, talent and imagination to shape ARTSPLASH 2010, a multimedia arts event. ARTSPLASH, a vibrant juried exhibition of original works, is a major showcase for the visual and performing arts which will be exhibited in the RAA’s sTudio 6 and sTudio 7 galleries, outdoor sculpture garden and on indoor and outdoor stages at Fort Tilden. Works in mixed media, drawing, painting, photography, craft art, sculpture, watercolor, video, cartooning, kinetic art, poetry, prose and all other media will all be considered. Music, dance, and performance pieces will also be considered. “InkSplash” was the critically claimed printmaking exhibit that will introduce Rockaway to more works by master printmakers. Location: sTudio 6 and 7. ARTSPLASH deadline: TBA. ARTSPLASH dates: September 12 – October 10. Recep - tion: TBA.

Gifted 2010: RAA invites members to bring out their very best. This show is open to works in all media, the more diverse in theme, subject and execution the better. Artists may submit works exhibited previously in other shows. sTudio 6. Deadline: TBA. Dates: November 13 – December 12. Reception: November 13.

“A Color Mix of Quilts and Artwork”: Open to quilts and all media. Artists are invited to submit colorful compositions in any theme. Quilts may be of any theme, design, size or materials. A unique approach to a traditional form is always welcome. Artwork may include, but is not limited to, watercolor, photography, sculpture, writing, mixed media, assemblage and music. All dates: TBA.

In addition, “Susan DeCastro – A Solo Show” is on view in sTudio 6, June 5 – June 20. Reception: June 6. The Halloween extravaganza is scheduled for October 28 – October 31.

This year as last, RAA will participate in New York City’s Immigrant Heritage Week. As a featured part of this event coordinated by the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, RAA will work with several Queens groups that have raised funds to commission a sculptor David Ostro to create a bust of Jacob Riis, writer, photographer, social reformer and Danish immigrant. The bust is presently scheduled to be unveiled in Jacob Riis Park on Saturday, April 17, 2010. Invited to attend are the Danish Royal Princess Benedikte and members of the Royal family, Danish teachers and students and their local counterparts. Watch this column for more information as it develops.

Sharing the same weekend, on Sunday, April 18, is the opening reception for “40 Shades of Green.” That exhibit is on view April 18 – May 23. Earth Day, April 22, is being celebrated during the run of the exhibit, which is designed to inspire recycling and an awareness of how each of us can help the environment.

Hope your holidays have been warm and wonderful and that your New Year is fulfilling, creative and spent with those you love most.
