Action Tips Off For 25th Annual SFDS Christmas Tournament

The 25th edition of the St. Francis de Sales Christmas Basketball Tour na - ment opens Friday night, December 18 with four games beginning at 6:00 p.m.

The tournament begins with the SFDS Subnovice Gold taking on Our Lady of the Angelus from Rego Park. The tournament has become a major holiday tradition in the Rockaway community and a highlight of the CYO calendar.

Thirty-seven teams from Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Staten Island and Long Island will compete for championships in six divisions.

Parishes include Corpus Christi, Woodside, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Green point, St. Camillus, Rockaway Park, St. Rose, Rockaway Beach, Tri- Parish, Long Beach, St. Helen, Howard Beach, St. Adalbert, Maspeth, St. Thom as Apostle, Woodhaven, Our Lady of Hope, Middle Village, St. Patrick, Bay Ridge, St. Stanislaus, Maspeth, Good Shepherd, Marine Park, Epi - phany, Manhattan, St. Jo seph, St. Vin - cent Ferrer, Flatbush, Blessed Sacrament, Staten Island, St. Andrew, Flushing and Blessed Trinity, Breezy Point.

The tournament continues through Wednesday, December 23, resumes from December 26 to December 30, and culminates with the championships and special awards ceremony on Jan - uary 2, 2010.

Initial games for the other St. Fran cis teams are as follows: On December 18, the Subnovice Blue will play at 7:00 p.m. and the Novice will play at 9 p.m.; on December 19 at 3:30 p.m. the Ban - tam team will take the court; the Inter - mediate game will be at 5:45 p.m.; and at 7:00 p.m. the Rookie team will play.

On December 21, the Pee Wee Gold starts at 7:45 p.m. December 22 at 5:45 p.m. will be the start of the Pee Wee Blue game.

The tournament is double elimination, which ensures at least two games for every team.

The tournament will also feature performances by the St. Francis Cheer - lead ers, raffles, refreshments for sale in the Small Hall, and, of course, a full dose of Christmas and holiday music.

Directors Marty and Keith Andresen are extremely excited about celebrating 25 years of the St. Francis Christ - mas Basketball Tournament, and look forward to seeing everyone at the St. Francis gym.
