Keep Parking Lot Free For Winter Season
The city has provided an unintended boost for the merchants of Beach 116 Street, and perhaps there is a way to keep that boost going for the entire winter season. It seems that reopening the municipal parking lot at the busy shopping street and having parking in the lot free while the city awaits a computer chip that will make its Muni-meters sing, has opened up the street to customers unlike anything has in past holiday seasons. For the first time in recent memory, shoppers can find open parking slots on the street as the store workers and owners park their vehicles in the parking lot. No more driving around and around for a parking spot. No more mandatory travel to Brooklyn or the Five Towns to shop for gifts. We would urge the city to continue the free ride for the remainder of the winter season. Certainly, that lot is never filled, except for hot summer Saturdays and Sundays, so the city would not be losing much revenue in the move, and it would greatly assist the struggling storeowners. Perhaps Councilman Eric Ulrich can get behind the idea and bring it personally to his friend and fellow Republican, Mayor Mike Bloomberg. It would mean a lot to Rockaway.
