A man suspected of dealing drugs pushed a police officer and then fled towards a busy shopping plaza last week, drawing a large crowd and police officers from all over the peninsula.

Police sources say that Dearius Brevard, 21, of 82-01 Beach Channel Drive, was stopped by Police Officer Mitchell in front of 87-09 Rockaway Beach Boulevard at about 1:45 p.m. on December 3.

He allegedly pushed Mitchell, who was attempting to arrest him for drug possession and fled toward the Dayton Plaza Shopping Center.

The police officer chasing him put in an urgent call for assistance and patrol cars from both the 100 and 101 Precincts responded.

The officer said that he saw the suspect tossing objects from his coat pocket.

A crowd gathered at the spectacle of a cop chasing a man and patrol cars screaming to a stop. They told The Wave that the police response was "over the top."

Local residents argue with police officers as other police leave the scene. Some locals were angry at the size of the response as more than a dozen officers floooded the area. When police finally collared Brevard, he was found to have seven small zip lock bags and one large bag containing marijuana.

In addition, the objects that he threw from his coat as he ran turned out to contain drugs as well.

Brevard was arraigned on December 4 on charges of resisting arrest and criminal possession of marijuana.
