Shining Light On Hammels Gun Violence

On Sunday night, shortly before two men were shot and one was killed in Far Rock away, a series of ten shots was heard by residents in the highrises along Shore Front Parkway at Beach 86 Street. Mostly, they went along with their business be cause hearing shots fired in that vicinity is a regular occurrence. On November 21, a young man riding his bicycle in the shopping center on Rockaway Beach Boulevard was shot twice when he didn't hand over his bike to four thugs quickly enough. On December 3, a police officer was assaulted at Beach 86 Street and the Boulevard. Crime is building around the Hammel Houses public housing complex and it is time for the city to become proactive in the battle against that crime. Shortly after September 11, the city began to put up surveillance cameras around Manhattan both as an anti-terrorism move and to monitor crime. Since that time, the cameras have spread to high-crime areas around the city. It is time to bring those cameras to the area around the Hammel Houses, particularly on Rockaway Beach Boulevard from Beach 73 Street to Beach 90 Street. Something has to be done to reassure the people living and shopping near the housing complex as well as those seeking to buy into the massive Arverne By The Sea development that they will be safe from the young thugs who carry guns and see everybody else as prey.
