Weekend 'A' Train Cut
Due to unanticipated construction needed on the South Channel Bridge, that connects Broad Channel with the Rockaways, there will be no A train service into Broad Channel and Rockaway the weekends of December 12 to December 13 and December 19 to December 20, according to MTA officials.
Herbert Lambert, A train station manager, made the announcement at this week's Community Board 14 meeting at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Rockaway Beach. Lambert says that the South Channel Drawbridge, that must occasionally lift for maritime traffic, does not lock correctly when lowered from the raised position.
Free shuttle buses will be provided starting at Howard Beach and carry riders into Broad Channel and the Rockaways. These closures are in addition to the myriad of detours and station closures that are already in progress while the peninsula train stations undergo complete rehabilitations.
Lambert also announced to the board that they are currently making minor repairs to the Broad Channel Station as well, in what he described as "sprucing up." The sprucing means new paint and basic cleanup of the station. Lambert was appointed as manager of the A line in July 2009 in the newly created position that is meant to create a point of contact and management for each of the New York City Transit Authority's 24 subway lines.
