Weiner Praises Store Gate Legislation

Congressman Anthony Weiner (D - Queens & Brooklyn) released the following statement in support of City Council legislation that would put an end to solid metal security gates, after the vote this week.

"The City Council passed a bill that will change the way we look at our commercial shopping areas for the better. The outdated graffiti gates that currently line our streets scare away both shoppers and businesses from our neighborhood shopping strips."

"Council Member Peter Vallone, Jr deserves credit for ushering this legislation through the Council.

It is good news for our neighborhood shopping strips and the many people who like to visit them."

First introduced in 1996, then-Coun - cil Member Weiner's bill would have required all new gates to provide at least 50% visibility into the store.

The City Council held a hearing on the legislation in June of 1997. Weiner left the City Council in December of that year.

Weiner added, "This bill becoming law is better late than never."
