Legionnaires Capture Third Division Title
The 2009 Brooklyn Hurricanes Youth Football season came to an end on Nov - ember 22 at the Aviator Sports Com - plex with an epic battle between the Huskies and Legionnaires in the Pee Wee Division Championship Game.
In the first half the Legion's Max Frankel of Neponsit scored a touchdown from 12 yards out and added the conversion for the first 8 points of the day.
The Huskies came right back down the field with Chris Ray of Belle Har - bor scoring from the one-yard line. But the Legionnaire defense preserved the lead, stopping the critical 2-point conversion to keep the score at 8-6.
The Legionnaires held on to the slim lead going into the fourth quarter. The Huskies offense was driving inside the Legionnaires' 20-yard line for a potential go-ahead score.
The Legionnaire defense, however, would bend but not break. Led by team captain and middle linebacker Brian Donohue, the defense stopped the Hus - kies on fourth down and turned the ball over to the offense for one last 85- yard championship drive.
The Legion controlled the ball and the clock as Frankel kept the drive go - ing by converting multiple third downs with some exceptional runs to keep the chains moving.
With less than three minutes re - main ing, QB Billy Mur doch ran 30 yards off the left side for a touchdown. Frankel added the two-point conversion on the ground to push the lead to 16-6, which decided the contest.
With the victory, the Legionnaires captured their third consecutive division title finishing the season with 8 traight wins after an opening day over - time loss to the Huskies.
