Bike Steal Shooters Arraigned For Attempted Murder

By Howard Schwach

Four Rockaway residents were arraign - ed on November 20 on charges of attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the bike-steal shooting of Japelle Cox, court documents show.

Court documents supplied by Queens District Attorney Richard Brown identify the shooter as Malik Miller, 20, of 81-03 Rockaway Beach Boulevard.

The other men who allegedly participated in the robbery and shooting were identified as Darrell Daniels, 19, of 82-02 Rock - away Beach Boulevard; Leroy Bar nett, 21, of 109 Beach 56 Street; and Sharem Edwards, 19, of 81-01 Beach Channel Drive.

Court records show that the four men surrounded Cox at about 3:57 p.m. in front of 86-07 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, in the Dayton Plaza Shopping Center.

The four men demanded Cox's green bicycle, cops say.

Cox told police that Miller pulled out a handgun and fired three shots, hitting him twice in the chest.

He was transferred to the trauma center at Jamaica Hospital, where he underwent an operation for his wounds.

Sources say that Cox is in stable condition at the hospital, but that one bullet remains lodged in his chest.

Three .22-caliber shells were recovered at the scene.

Police searching the area found the four men with the bike on Beach 54 Street, more than a mile from the shooting scene.

They all have been charged in Queens Criminal Court on charges of attempted murder in the second degree, assault in the first degree, and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree.

They are also charged with acting in concert, a charge that makes each of the other three men as guilty as Miller for injuries to Cox suffered in the shooting.
