A fire that was declared of suspicious origin swept through three storefronts on Rockaway Beach Boulevard at Beach 97 Street on Monday night. Fire Department sources say the fire, which began in the basement of Get Fresh Fashions at 97-02 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, was called in to the 911 system at 8:54 p.m. Several local fire companies responded and the fire was declared under control at 9:25 p.m. Fire marshals are investigating the blaze. Nobody was hurt in the fire, but there was some damage to the stores and their merchandise, officials say. The other two stores involved were the Seabreeze Deli, which was open on Tuesday, and John & John's Pizza, which suffered smoke damage. More...

Four Rockaway residents were arraign - ed on November 20 on charges of attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the bike-steal shooting of Japelle Cox, court documents show. P.S. 333 in Arverne held their annual food drive in November. As the Season of Thanksgiving was upon them, the school wanted to do something for the many people who are less fortunate. They collected four jumbo boxes of canned goods that included canned fruit, gravies, meats, soups, cake mix, rice, pasta, corn meal and water, and juices. Raymond M. Donohue, a longtime Rockaway resident, died November 30. Donohue was born in Manhattan and served in the US Navy during the Vietnam era. Donohue is preceded in death by his brother, William.
