Weiner, U.S. Army Engineers Tour Beach Erosion

United States Army Corps of Engineers New York District Commander John Boule and U.S. Representative Anthony Weiner toured the erosion ravaged section of beach near Beach 92 Street on Monday morning. The remnants of Hurricane Ida damaged the Rockaway shore, eroding the beach and flooding a portion of Shore Front Parkway. In the area near Beach 92 Street, the beachfront became inaccessible from the boardwalk.

Weiner and Boule announced plans to restore the beach with sand replenishment before the busy summer beach season starts. Both said plans are already in the works and they understand that they must act quickly to ensure that the beach returns to its proper form. Beach erosion is a typical problem in Rockaway and often, when needed, beach replenishment takes place in select areas. However, this level of damage, Weiner says, has not taken place on the shores of Rockaway in at least 20 years and requires immediate, special attention.
