Busy Basketball Action For St. Francis Boys, Girls Teams

There were a number of exciting basketball games that took place this weekend at the St. Francis de Sales Gymnasium.

The Girls Pee Wee Gold met Blue at St. Francis and it was the first meeting for these two well-matched teams. The Gold would prevail with the help of Maddie McDade, who was all over the court handling the ball with care and playing phenomenal defense against her friends. Elizabeth Clark was on fire with 4 points, Katie Marquardt added 4, and Sinead Gallagher and Claire Hughes also hit 2 points each to give Gold a 12-4 victory.

The Girls Novice team won on the road this past weekend, defeating St. Margaret, 20-8. St. Francis was led by the solid offensive play of Keira Walsh and Emma Meade, who both made for a fine inside/outside tandem in each scoring 6 points.

On the defensive side of the ball, Nicole Gibson and Megan Gigliello helped increase a two-point lead at half to a 12-point win. The Novice girls' record is 5-3 on the season. The Bantam girls lost a tough one to Our Lady of Hope, 23-18. The SFDS Boys Subnovice Gold played Nativity on Sunday. In another tight game, Timmy Murnan had 6 points, and was assisted on the court by Brendan Glynn, Terence Mullin, Brendan Buckley, Terence Strehle and Ryan Meade. Those players all had 2 points each with Kevin Connelly playing strong under the boards.

SFDS Boys Pee Wee Gold visited St. Thomas Apostle and brought home a win with good teamwork. Balanced scoring helped produce a victory. Kenny Dean, Aidan Donahue and Liam Howley had 4 points each. Joe Allessandro, Jag Guidarelli, Sean O'Connor and TJ Powderly added 2 points each. Jack Bambury, Adam DeSilva, David Hanrahan and Brendan Vasquez each played good defense.

Last Sunday, SFDS Gold played SFDS Blue in a see-saw battle until Blue pulled away in the fourth quarter for the 16-11 win. The team worked together and showed strong play, led by Guidarelli with 4 points. Kenny Dean, Howley, and Allessandro added 2 points and Aidan Donahue scored one point.

SFDS Boys Bantam lost its first game to Gate of Heaven, 32-27. The Bantams were killed on the boards and gave up too many second shots to a very physical opponent. However, down 15-5 at the half, SFDS rallied back to within one point in the 4th quarter. Matt DeCrescenzo led the charge with 8 points. Thomas Glynn, Ryan Moran and Kyle Connelly played tough defense.

This Saturday's schedule begins at 12:00 p.m. and includes the Girls Subnovice Blue and Gold teams playing each other. The Boys Subnovice teams will also play one another. Sunday's slate starts at 1:00 p.m. St. Francis hopes everyone enjoyed Thanksgiving and when you've had enough football, come on over to the St. Francis gym.
