SJEH To Offer HIV/AIDS Screening

St. John's Episcopal Hospital will offer HIV/AIDS screening on World AIDS Day, Tuesday, December 1. The screening, which is confidential and free of charge, will take place 2 p.m. and 5 p.m in the Hospital's first floor Boardroom. SJEH is located at 327 Beach 19 Street in Far Rockaway.

The screening involves a fingerstick and results will take 20 minutes. Educational information and counseling are also provided. The screening is being provided by the Ryan White program of Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, there are an estimated 1.1 million people in the U.S. living with diagnosed or undiagnosed HIV infection. In 2007 (facts updated August 2009), 42,655 new cases of HIV/AIDS in adults, adolescents, and children were diagnosed in the 34 states with long-term, confidential name-based HIV reporting. An estimated 56,300 new infections occurred in the U.S. in 2006. The CDC further reports that due to advances in HIV treatments, the progression of HIV infection to AIDS slowed beginning in the mid-1990s.
