Harris: 'I Didn't Mean To Kill Him'
In a wide-ranging televised interview with Cha - nnel 2's Mary Calvi on Monday night, convicted killer Brigitte Harris said that she wanted to stop her father from molesting others, but didn't mean to kill him in July of 2007 when she handcuffed him to a chair, stuffed a towel in his mouth and surgically cut off his penis. She then boiled the penis in a pot on the stove "so that it could never be reattached and used again."
The woman who dubbed herself "Lady Vengeance" on her Face Book page said that she remembered thinking, "I have to do what I have to do.
Just to cut it off and make sure he doesn't use it to hurt anybody else. I never intended to kill him."
At trial, Harris testified that her father, Eric Goodridge of Staten Island, sexually abused her from the time she was three years old.
"Years of torture, years of sexual abuse," she said at her trial.
She added that she had to act when she saw Goodridge interacting with her sister's daughter and feared he would molest her as well.
The jury believed her story and found her guilty of manslaughter rather than murder.
Several of her jurors reportedly wrote letters to the judge, asking for leniency for Harris.
The judge said, however, that the jury did not carry out his instructions to come to a sentence based on the facts and not based on how they felt about her ordeal.
He sentenced her to five to fifteen years in prison, the maximum he could give her given the jury's decision not to find her guilty of murder. With time served and time off for good behavior, she could be out by late in 2012, experts say.
