Scholars' Students Sail And Study
On Thursday, November 12, 2009, the entire 7th grade from The Scholars' Academy traveled to Riis Landing via yellow school buses to go on an Eco-Tour excursion. The boat captains, deck hands and teachers supervised the students as they boarded the Captain Red.
The trip included an hour and a half to two hour cruise around Jamaica Bay where the captains and park rangers taught students facts about Jamaica Bay and its wildlife. Students also had the opportunity to tour the boat, and learn about the two outside decks, indoor galley and captain's quarters. There was also a hands-on ex - hibit of starfish and crabs; this pit stop was a favorite of many of the students.
While eating lunch in the dining area of the boat, students enjoyed talking with the captain and crew and singing songs. This was an amazing trip enjoyed by all. Upon returning to school, students in all of the 7th grade classes created thank you cards for the boat captains. The Scholars' Academy plans on bringing all of their other grades aboard for more trips this spring.
