BCAC Girls Shine In CYO Soccer Playoffs
The St. Virgilius/St. Camillus girls eighth grade soccer pulled off the upset of the quarterfinal round. The team defeated third ranked St. Margaret's in a thrilling game at Juniper Valley Field to seal a place in the playoff semifinals.
Having been beaten 7-1 by St. Margaret's earlier in the season, few would have given SVC a chance to make the semifinals. But St. Margaret's quickly realized they were in for a fight as the SVC girls dominated the early proceedings.
St. Margaret slowly started to get a foothold in the game by the end of the half and was rewarded with a goal right on the stroke of half time.
The SVC girls refused to give up the game and came out in the second half with a renewed vigor. They continued to exert pressure and finally had their breakthrough on the scoreboard. Some clever build up play between Hunter Hennessey and Erin Kelly supplied a pass to Britney McGovern, who put the ball in the net with a superb volley to tie the game.
SVC wasn't finished. Teresa Rissmeyer set up a pass to McGovern, who made no mistake firing the ball into the net from the narrowest of angles to give SVC a deserved 2-1 lead. Some nervous moments followed but a stellar performance from SVC's Briana McCarthy in goal and her defense, helped by Megan Minihane, kept St. Margaret out of the net. It made for an unforgettable victory for SVC and a berth in the CYO semifinals.
