SFDS CYO Basketball Teams Tips Off Start To Season
The 2009-10 CYO basketball season for St. Francis de Sales is currently underway. The girls began on October 17 and the boys will begin this weekend.
Here are some early highlights from the St. Francis de Sales girls' teams.
The Subnovice Blue team recently played SFDS gold and St. Matthias. The Blue team played hard and fast as they were led by playmaking guards Alex Dadario and Reilly Mangano.
Kelsey Flynn, Elizabeth Meringolo and Kate Wrynn provided the scoring punch. They were provided great passes from Victoria Meier and Paige McDade. The SFDS were led in rebounding by Paige Humphrey and Elizabeth Carmody.
The team's de fense was led by Chrissy and Carolyn Diehm.
The Pee Wee Gold girls played St. Stanislaus last Sunday. Alice Murphy played great defense in her debut game, along with Sydney O'Brien and Ashley Kelly. Katie Marquardt scored 8 points, Claire Hugh - es added 6, Makayla Beehler and Linsay de Boer added two points each as the Gold girls won 18-2.
The girls then went on to play St Mary Gate of Heaven. The Pee Wee Gold were victorious again by the score of 12-1.
Beehler played unbelievable de fense and caused many turnovers. Kelly scored her first basket of the season along with Caroline Kelly.
The St. Francis girls' novice basketball team started the season with three straight wins.
The team was led by the overall aggressive play of Courtney McCool, Maria Dicarlo, Kaitlin Neiswen - ter, and Laur en Marten. The girls returned home this past weekend for a pair of game. First up was blessed trin ity, who would edge SFDS by 2 points in a low scoring affair.
The next game for SFDS was an opening game rematch vs. St. Anastasia from Douglaston. The nov - ice girls were led by Devin Gavigan, Molly Bres lin, Nicole Gibson, and McCool. After battling back from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter, SFDS went on a brief run to cut the St. Anastasia lead to 4. But the SFDS girls ran out of gas and fell 23-15.
The St. Francis de Sales Pee Wee Gold boys started their season off with a home win against Gate of Heaven. Jag Guidarelli led the team with 10 points, followed by Joe Allessandro with 8. Liam Howley & TJ Powderly each scored 4 points. Bambury, Dean, O'Connor and Vasquez rounded the scoring with 2 points a piece. Duffy showed good passing skills and hard defense was played by Hanrahan & DeSilva.
The SFDS Bantam Boys defeated St. Thomas Apostle, 39-13. John Boyle and John O'Connor led all scoring with 10 and 8 points respectively. Kyle Connolly was strong on the boards, while Alex Gold - berg and Ethan Ruiz combined defensively to stifle Apostle's star player.
A full schedule of games will be played at the St. Francis gymnasium this weekend.
